Open Mics…are they really open?
01Apr08
Are open mics really open? There’s a lot of “back scratching” going on at open mics. Many times, “the regulars” are over powering the mics and fresh new voices are not heard because of it. Check out our featured article on Open Mics and then come back and comment on it. How do you feel about venues playing favorites on the mic?

It depends on the service you provide for your customers. Open Mics are what they are “Platforms” so however the host sees fit to run his/her mic is their call. Whoever has problem with that needs open their OWN open mic geared to whatever the other open mic is missing, not as competition but moreso of a completion thing and you could help one another. (“Back scratching”) If your intent is love reciprocity has a way of working things out and they call it Karma. Peace and Thanks for a platform I could get my two cents in.
I feel an Open Mic really depends on the Host. I live in Los Angeles and there are many Open Mics all over the place and I have been to some that give regulars or more well known Spoken Word Artists, Vocalist, or Comedians the mic. I must say Spoken Funk hosted by Poetri has a cool Open Mic session for the first 15 minutes. It is a first come first serve then it is on with the rest of the show. I am privileged to be a regular at the spots I hang out at, but there was a time when I did not get a chance to go up because of a regular. I started to notice that the regulars had their own Open Mics and it was a courtesy too let them go up. It is kind of like I scratch your back you scratch mine. I attend “Whacked Out Wednesdays” hosted by Buddy Lewis and Kym Whitley all the time and a couple weeks ago there were so many comedians in the house and everyone wanted to go up. This one particular comedian was upset because he did not get to go up. Buddy Lewis said,” I remember when I would go to Robin Harris comedy show and would want to go up and did not get a chance, so I went and got my own room. I thought about what he said if you can’t get on the mic make a mic.
